The Asia Carbon Institute (ACI), a non-governmental organization based in Singapore, has launched a carbon credit registry to offer carbon credits for carbon-intensive industries in Asia. ACI focuses on technology-based and urban-related solutions, which sets it apart from other carbon verification organizations that primarily focus on nature-based projects or projects in developing economies. ACI certifies and registers projects that minimize or remove greenhouse gases, allowing the carbon credits generated to be traded on a carbon exchange.
ACI’s emphasis on technology-based projects in urban areas aims to address the lack of focus on carbon credits in Asia’s megacities and carbon-intensive manufacturing industries. These projects, such as concrete manufactured from carbon capture utilization technologies, typically generate fewer carbon credits compared to nature-based projects. ACI founder John Lo notes that in some cases, new methodologies need to be developed for these projects.
